4934 It would be a great thing if 2013 saw comic book readers wise up and move away from their habitual buying habits and try the indies.

Perhaps that is what is happening as the #1 comic book of 2012 was not a Marvel or DC title, but Image Comics and Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead.

Or maybe that is not what's happening as the next top nine titles all belong to Marvel.

Hey, I'm just a bitter Marvel Cosmic fan.

Diamond released the top selling titles for 2012 and not only does The Walking Dead take the top spot amongst comic book sales with issue #100, but graphic novel sales as well (see below for more).

What I find interesting about sales for The Walking Dead is that it just might show that TV "matters" over movies in regards to comics.

We all know that the billion dollar plus super hero movie business basically has zip affect on comic book sales -- but what about TV?

Since its debut in 2010 on AMC, The Walking Dead's popularity has risen faster than the zombie Roamers in Kirkman's post-apocalyptic world, and sales on the comic book have reflected that. Back issues for TWD are red hot, with the first issue even fetching five figures. Sales for the video game have been astounding, coming in at $40 million and also grabbing the Best Game of the Year Award from Spike TV's VGA Awards. By all indications TWD isn't slowing down as a new video game is in development, and there's gotta be a whole lot more coming down the pipeline this year as well.

So will the buzz surrounding The Walking Dead work its way into other Image Comics and indie Publishers? Well, Marvel's market share for 2012 was down with Image Comics up. So that's a good sign. DC's was about the same.

Overall, comic sales were up about 15% in 2012 and graphic novel sales up 14% compared to 2011.
