picOne of the greatest arcs in the annals of Marvel Mystic/Cosmic was Dr. Strange’s quest for God in the pages of Marvel Premiere during the early 1970s.

Co-creators Steve Englehart and Frank Brunner took Stephen on a rollickin’ roll through time and space to discover the secret of a magician named Cagliostro and wound up revealing the story of the 616-Reality’s creator.

Sise-Neg (“Genesis” spelled backwards) is a 31st century sorcerer who attempts to become omnipotent by time-traveling back through history and collecting all magical energies. While in 18th century Paris impersonating the magician Cagliostro, the character encounters the Sorcerer Supreme, Dr. Strange, who was at the time searching for perennial foe Baron Mordo.

Despite opposition from Strange, Sise-Neg travels back to a prehistoric era on Earth when the extradimensional demon Shuma-Gorath rules, and subsequently uses his newfound magicks to banishes the powerful entity.

Continuing to journey back in time, Sise-Neg (as witnessed by Strange, in the role of a “Watcher,” lol) reached the moment prior to the Big Bang that creates the current universe and becomes all-powerful.

Originally intending to recreate the universe in his image, Sise-Neg seemingly gains wisdom as he gains power and decides instead to let events take their course and the original universe comes into being.

Is Sise-Neg the Biblical “God,” at least of the 616-Reality? Who knows? Well, according to witness Stephen Strange, the answer was affirmative … at least in the 1970s!
