Dynamite Entertainment announced during SDCC that, for the first time, writer Cullen Bunn (Fearless Defenders, Deadpool) will be working for the company, crafting a book based one of the biggest primetime TV successes of the past decade, Heroes.
Wanting to get the skinny on a comic based on one of his favorite series, Cosmic Book News Managing Editor Byron Brewer tracked down Bunn and filed the following exclusive interview.
Cosmic Book News: Cullen, you have never worked with Dynamite before. How did this Heroes project come about?
Cullen Bunn: I had been talking to the folks at Dynamite in regards to other projects for a week or so when Nick Barrucci contacted me and asked if I was a fan of the show. From there, we started discussing the possibilities a comic book series presented. Some of the ideas we hit on—which I’m not at liberty to divulge just yet—were too exciting to pass up.
Cullen Bunn: Yeah, absolutely. I watched it every week.
As far as favorite characters, there were a few I really liked. Claire, Hiro, Peter and Noah all come to mind as favorites, but Sylar is definitely a terrific villainous character.
Cullen Bunn: I always liked that the “super powers” were used as springboards to tell some very human stories. I also really liked the conspiracy aspects of the show. Both of those elements will be driving forces for the comic book.
But one of the things that really captured my interest in this project is that I’ve been given such an unbelievable opportunity to leave my mark on the Heroes mythology.
Cullen Bunn: Very little! I can’t reveal much about the series without uncovering some pretty substantial spoilers. And it’s far too soon for that! I think this story will take people by surprise, and it will give us the opportunity to explore the lives of these characters in some new and unexpected ways.
Cullen Bunn: I will be sticking to continuity ... but … there will be a pretty shocking twist in the comic that will shake things up in a big way.
Cullen Bunn: I try to approach all characters as real people first. That’s the tactic I’m using here as well. Each issue, at least in the initial arc, will focus on a specific character. Claire is our POV character in the first issue, Hiro in the second.
Cullen Bunn: There’s definitely the possibility of new heroes … and new villains … but initially I’ll be focusing on a core group of characters, primarily the iconic characters from the very first season.
Cullen Bunn: You mean besides Sylar?
Yes, there is a “big bad,” a force that will be working against our protagonists, pretty much from the very first page of the very first issue. This group will be veiled in secrecy to some degree, and the divulging of the truth behind their machinations will be a big part of the series.
Cullen Bunn: Longtime fans will be able to follow the characters they know and love in some interesting new directions. (Did I mention there are some big surprises in store?) New readers will be able to join these characters in a way that will catch them up right away.
Cosmic Book News would like to thank Cullen Bunn during this busy comic con season for answering our questions. We would also like to thank Dynamite’s own Nick Barrucci and Keith Davidsen for helping make this interview possible.
